About Us

Stair Restoration is an international group of highly skilled conservators and restorers who combine centuries-old processes with state-of-art technology to care for some of the finest furniture collections in the world. Stair Restoration was established by Colin Stair, former director of Sotheby's Restoration and fourth generation of his English family to work with fine antiques.

As collectors and decorators know all too well, the acquisition of objects is only the first step towards the incorporation into a collection. Kept indoors in irregular climates, wooden furniture and objects, all being of organic origin, can suffer from dimensional changes, which could result in warping, splitting and veneer delamination. At Stair Restoration, we work with a range of restoration issues, from general wear and tear to fire and flood damage.

Stair Restoration distinguishes itself by the scholarship that informs our approach. Before any work is done, the history and condition of the property is examined to ensure that all restoration is authentic and appropriate to the piece and will not alter its intrinsic and monetary value. All processes are carefully recorded and can be reversed if necessary. Photographs are also taken when required or requested by the client. The work is performed by experienced conservators and restorers in our Claverack, New York facility. We have a multi-structure converted nineteenth-century railroad station that serves as both a conservation and storage facility. Stair Restoration will travel to private homes, museums and historic sites to perform restoration and architectural work on site.
